Thank you for composing my thoughts exactly on the Sphere. I write a sci-fi anthology and I've been trying to figure out what cityscapes look like and I've definitely come to the conclusion that there will be more goofy and ridiculous— and earnest— stuff like this, not less.
I don't think there will be tons of things like this in every city. But almost every city will have something Weird by the end of the 21st century. Every generation does something like this.
on a more serious note I don't think you can define modernism with earnestness and optimism alone. we can appreciate the architectural originality of the sphere but its social function is far from original or aspirational. innovative postmodernism isn't modernism
I mean I think I'd probably sincerely argue that a fundamental part of the break between modernism and postmodernism was the sincerity of the art being produced. Postmodernism has always had a deep cynicism applied to it. I think it was Gaddis that said something like nobody could write literature that wasn't ironic anymore
